When we say Tupperware, generically, it refers to those plastic or glass storage containers having lids that snap close, or lids that close in a pretty sleek fashion!
These come in different shapes and sizes each suited for specific types of storage around the house.
For example, Tupperware has the citrus keepers for keeping citrus fruits fresh, salad jars, grain bowls and popularly, the freezer storage containers.
While not all of the products in the food storage category are safe to put inside the freezer or microwave, nearly all of them are dishwasher safe.
Yes!
Most Tupperware storage containers are safe to put inside the dishwasher for cleaning, but ensure to confirm from the product manual first. Place them on the top rack of the dishwasher and run the normal cycle plus dry cycle. You might have to wipe clean some water droplets in the container even after drying the product in the dishwasher due to how ineffective dishwasher drying can be at drying certain materials.
Storage containers aren’t the only products that the tupperware brand offers for its consumers.
Other lines of products include kitchen tools, servewares, cookwares and also bakewares, and while some of them are safe to put inside the dishwasher, others can only have certain parts in it or not a single part at all.
In this article, we take a look at the method of cleaning tupperware storage containers by machine and by hand, and in the end, we provide a list of other tupperware products that are safe to put inside the dishwasher.
How To Clean Tupperware Storage Containers In The Dishwasher
Tupperware storage containers include:
- Universal Jars
- Bowls
- Decorated canisters
- Veggie and fruit keepers
- Cheese storage containers
- Divided dishes
- Shallow containers
- Ice cube containers
And nearly all of them are made quite durable to withstand the torrid perimeters of the dishwasher, although some containers for example the “Sheerly Elegant ” line are recommended to be cleaned by hand. This is mostly because they fade and deteriorate in aesthetic quality with continued washing.
That is why it is extremely important to check the product manual first to verify it’s safety in the dishwasher!
When you don’t have the manual, you can always verify from the Tupperwares website in your region, i.e. @ tupperware.com (for US Customers).
Cleaning Tupperware in the dishwasher is quite easy, first, make sure the products fit inside the dishwasher, because if they don’t, the only option would be to hand wash, as i wouldn’t want any adjustment to position the tupperware product near the heating element of the dishwasher. That can cause wrapping!
Next, load properly on the top rack, ensuring the inside of the containers are tilted at an angle to face the water jet so cleaning is efficient. Then run a normal cycle or a more intensive cycle for a heavily stained and soiled product, and dry using the dishwasher dry option.
Take out from the machine and inspect for poorly dried surfaces. Use a paper towel to pat dry, then store in a safe corner to air dry!
How To Clean Tupperware By hand
If for some reason dishwashing isn’t an option, you can always resort to handwashing for cleaning your Tupperware.
For that, make a solution containing mild dish soap and warm water, then use a gentle sponge dipped inside the solution to wipe clean the container.
You can also soak it in the solution for about 10 to 15 minutes especially when your tupperware has some odor in it, before washing.
